Some MIRIAD
tasks create scratch files to hold temporary results. These
files do not show up in directory listings, but they do take up real space
(these files are guaranteed to be deleted if a task dies).
MIRIAD
will place these scratch files in the directory pointed to by
the environment variable TMPDIR. If this is not set,
the current default directory is used.
