Research on stars

Prof. Dr. K. S. de Boer

Stars are born in dense interstellar gas clouds and live through the long main-sequence stadium using hydrogen burning as energy source. They then evolve into many different star types. The details of stellar evolution are basically set by the initial mass of the star. Research on stars is carried out predominantly at the Sternwarte.

Research on stars aims in general at understanding stellar evolution and at determining the age of stars. For that investigations of star clusters are carried out. Among the types investigated especially are the subdwarf stars but also the general stellar population of the Milky Way halo. Furthermore, Cepheids and Wolf-Rayet stars are investigated. The Sternwarte is involved in the new German astrometric satellite project DIVA.
Measurements of stars and star clusters are also used to determine their kinematics in order to investigate Stars in nearby galaxies are of special interest, too (see star groups in the Magellanic Clouds and Bonn/Bochum Graduiertenkolleg on Magellanic Clouds and other Dwarf Galaxies).
