Prof. Frank Bertoldi

Profile

Since 2004 I have been professor and head of the radioastronomy group at the Argelander-Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn. I was the institute director from 2009 to 2012, deputy director 2013-2014, and am chair of the physics/astronomy department (Fachgruppe) since October 2014. I studied physics from 1979 to 1983 at the University of Cologne and received my PhD in Physics from U.C. Berkeley in 1989. I was a postdoc at Princeton University, at the Institut Astrophysique de Paris, the MPE Garching and the MPIfR Bonn.

My currrent research focuses on the formation of stars, galaxies, and massive black holes in the early Universe, and on a project to constrain structure formation and cosmological parameters by means of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich, X-ray and weak lensing observations of galaxy clusters. My lesser insterest cover molecular cloud structure, star formation, Kuiper belt objects, PDRs, shocks, and gamma-ray bursts. I currently teach a master class on the interstellar medium and a bachelor class on theoretical physics.

Group

Our submillimeter to radio astronomy group roughly divides into the

Staff scientist Dr. Reinhold Schaaf works on astronomical tools and software, and engineer Philipp Müller on microwave technology and telescope shutters.

Projects

We host the German node of the European ALMA Regional Center (ARC), which is managed by Dr. Stefanie Mühle, we contribute to the bolometer data analysis software package BoA, and we are partners in the COSMOS, NANTEN2, CCAT, and eROSITA projects. We are members of the SFB 956 Conditions and Impact of Star Formation and the DFG TR 33 The Dark Universe.
