Software Information

about the

Linux PCs

This document has old content, but for the latest Debian 2.2 release installed on all 17 (soon 19) PC workstations you can look at the list of installed packages (created by 'dpkg -l'): stwlicfg_deb22_08_2000.sel.
The frequently used software should now (28. November, 1997) be installed individually on each of the new PCs (aibn35, 37, 38, 39, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46) operating under S.u.S.E. Linux 5.0-5.3!, the system programs which are part of the normal Linux distribution:
see the file stwlicfg_suse50_11_1997.sel for details of the installed packages
and the additionally installed software (in '/usr/lib/...' with links to the executables in '/usr/bin'):
Please note that you have to adapt/adopt your config files in your login directory ('~', normally '/user3/username'), namely
'.cshrc'
for C-SHell [csh|tcsh] users, including an if-branch for Linux (for users of the standard Linux Shell, the Born Again SHell [bash], it's a little bit different),
'.xinitrc'
and
'.Xresources'
for XFree86 (the graphic system),
'.fvwm2rc'
for the standard window manager (latest version 06.10.1997),
'.alias'
file for aliases valid on all Unix Systems (Ultrix, OSF/1 and Linux), which mustn't have path definitions for netscape, midas, iraf, etc.,
'.alias-linux'
for special setting, including TeX path and prompt and at last
'.exrc'
for vi.
You may find examples of these files (only in beta-versions, I still have to fix some minor problems) in '~sysstw/conf'.
A better set may be available from Georg (e.g. with variable definitions in '.login', i.e. valid in the window manager) - we should soon provide a new set of example configuration files.
If you encounter any problem/bug/difficulty, feel free to contact me (via E-Mail or personally, in room 3.08 in front of 'aibn45').

Good Luck and FAST Working,
Jochen M. Braun
