Please note: Kevin Krisciunas does not run a photocopy service. Many libraries have Sky and Telescope magazine back to volume 1 and photocopy services. So, please try to find the articles at your end. Thanks for your consideration!

How many times have you leafed through dozens of issues of Sky & Telescope because you are certain that there was an article about some astronomer in it? This index should save you some time, but it is not intended to be an all-encompassing document. I first began working on it from my own issues (Sep. 1965 onward) in order to fill out the name index for a book. I was primarily interested in references to articles that listed birth and death dates. When I went back to complete the index back to Vol. 1, No. 1, I decided to include information of a more general nature. Of course it is not possible (or necessary) to include all the references to astronomers such as Galileo, Kepler, or even Henry Norris Russell, but how else are you going to find a reference to Dr. G. Waltemath or to the astronomical pirate, Basil Ringrose?

As a great deal of biographical information is contained in the column "Astronomical Scrapbook," I give in the Appendix a list of all of those titles. The principal article about women in pre-20th century astronomy is in Nov. 1954, pp. 7-9. Note: In some cases the birth dates will be off by a year because S&T says that a particular person died at some age, rather than explicitly giving the person's birth and death dates. Some of these cases are indicated by the age at which the person died, listed after the assumed dates of birth and death. I suggest that you double-check the dates for any person whose death date corresponds to within a year of the issue of S&T referenced.

As a rule amateur astronomers and planetarium staff are not included. There will be relatively little information found on living astronomers. The oddest exception is for G. Haro, for whom a mistaken obituary was printed when Joe Ashbrook was told over the phone that "Haro..." died, that turning out to be Harold Johnson.

Beginning with Vol. 69 (Jan. 1985) I am including references to observatories. Examples: Leiden Observatory, Space Telescope, Mount Wilson.

The issues before Sep. 1965 were read from microfilm, which is harder to read carefully. This may make for some missing or incorrect information (e.g., sometimes it is hard to distinguish a "4" from a "1").

Other sources of biographical information in the magazine which were not exhaustively indexed are:

If you are looking for biographical information on some astronomer, try these reference sources: Using these sources would be the fastest means by which to find out something about the famous scientists. This index should facilitate locating information about the more obscure personages. In any case, beware of using this index as a reference source in itself. The birth dates may be off by one year, as explained above. I may have copied or typed the information incorrectly. So use this index and locate the issue of Sky & Telescope to get the most accurate information. Some information not obtained directly from Sky & Telescope is enclosed in square brackets.

Usage note: Names beginning with "Van", "van der" or "van den" are listed in the V's, but those just beginning with "van" (like van Rhijn) are listed under the second part of the surname.

I would appreciate being informed of errors and obvious omissions in this index. I thank Prof. Fred Rost for having gone through the index in August and September of 2002 and providing updated information on over 70 astronomers. This index was last revised on 15 February 2005. Please address comments to kkrisciu@nd.edu. Thanks!
