Daniel Lenz

I'm a postdoc at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), working on the interface between Galactic astronomy and cosmology. The focus of my early career is 21-cm observations in the framework of the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS). Through the correlation of dust and gas, I became increasingly interested in the cosmic infrared background, which eventually led to my transition to cosmology.

Some of my research interests are:

  • Atomic and molecular gas flows in our Galaxy and how they shape the evolution of spiral galaxies in general.
  • The multiphase interstellar medium, the properties of the different phases and their interplays and transitions.
  • The cosmic infrared background that can be revealed by proper foreground models. By using this measurement to constrain cosmological models, it allows us to e.g. probe the star formation history of the Universe and to put new limits on non-Gaussianity.
  • Modern methods of image analysis, machine learning, and Bayesian inference, mostly realised in the python programming language.
