Visitors to St Barnabas Church in its remote rural location have asked:
Why is this extraordinary building here, apparently in the middle of nowhere?
For a hundred years the church was at the centre of life on
the Denbies Estate. Its foundation and construction was the
result of the efforts of three architects:
Thomas Cubitt, his son George Cubitt and George Gilbert Scott.

After Ranmore George was vicar of Rothwell co. York 1872-1882;
and vicar of Clifton Hampden 1882-1889.
Then George decided to go to South Africa.
George suffered from t.b.c. (from GEM).
George died 1891 in Ceres (170 km NE of Cape Town), South Africa,
and was buried in Ceres Cemetery.
A Memorial Inscription exists there as well as a Memorial window in Ranmore Church.
Will dated 15 September, 1880, proved 18 August 1891 (from
Gibbs family tree).
Dorothea moved back to England and lived 1901 Chelsea,
London (census data), but died soon after the census.
She was burried 21/03/1901 in Clifton Hampden, Ox.
Most of the children had moved with the family to South Africa and
stayed there.
The information about Dorothea's ancestry as well as the census data are taken from
Gibbs family tree.
However, that Gibbs database tuns out to not be flawless....
GEM = Greg Martin, great-great-grandson.
