Programme 173-00: van Bemmel et al. "Radio-loud active galaxies"     bemmel.cat

    Primary observer: Frank Bertoldi
    Contacts: bertoldi@mpifr-bonn.mpg.de, bemmel@astro.rug.nl

Instructions (by Frank B.):

   (1) on-off detection of ratio galaxies should reach rms of 0.8 mJy
    (2) use high-tau weather
    (3) integrate 3 x 15 minutes per source (3 x 4 scans x 16 subscans x 10 sec  /nosym)
            NOTE: 3 x 4 x 16 x 10 seconds is not equal to 45 minutes!!! (IVB)
    (4) also obtain maps of 3C323.1 and 3C334 (if time permits after 3C79 map -- IVB).

total to 20.12: 1180 subscans of 10s x 1.5 = 4.9h + overhead
jan-feb10:  34x12 + 16x16 = 2.8h  -- total 7.7h

Details for upcoming run (May 2001):
(added by IVB, Mar 18)

Targets marked with a red O have priority (have both infrared and radio data).
Most of the objects marked are weak, try to get a total rms ~0.8mJy. Targets
marked with a black X are done, except for a few, which have to be reduced
still to get a good measure. The rest is left to do if time permits, but I rather have
a few solid detections than a lot of 3 sigma results.

A map should be made of 3C79 with the scanning direction perpendicular to
the radio axis in order to detect a possible core & hotspot. The radio axis runs
almost exactly east-west (~75 deg W from N), and the W hotspot seems to
be much stronger than the core in this object. For details on existing map
see log of Mar 18, scans 5147-56 & 5159-63.

Priority targets:
(added by IVB on March 15, last updated Mar 17)

    NLRG: 3C61.1, 3C330, (3C79 --> very weak!)       narrow-line radio galaxies
    BLRG: 3C33.1 (3C111)     broad-line radio galaxies
    QSR    : 3C334, 3C351, 3C381, (3C323.1)   quasars
MAP of 3C79 with scan direction perpendicular to radio axis (map in folder!)

These objects all need one more 4 x 16 scan, for the weaker ones try 2 scans 4 x 16.
The catalog for these in xephem is called prio_ivb.edb.

Be careful: 3C111 is identical to a calibrator source and hard to see in xephem

Instructions (updated by IVB):
(last edited Mar 16)

See below for instructions per source added Mar 17

    (1) on-off detection should reach 1 mJy rms noise, try to push to 0.8 mJy if time permits
    (2) if high-tau: do 2 separate 20 minute scans  (2 x 8 scans x 16 subscans x 10 sec, asymmetric)
           if low-tau: do 3 x 10 or 2 x 15  minute scan (3 x 4 or 2 x 6 scans x 16 subscans x 10 sec, asymmetric),
when no result after first 10 minutes, try another source and return to first one later.
    (3) try to get a map of 3C334, or 3C323.1 (priority: 3C334)
    (4) aim for total integration on weak sources of  ~1800 - 2000 seconds, rms of  ~0.8-1 mJy

And if you get very bored:
try to have a look at the nearly finished objects. These include: RBS0281,  3C381,
3C93, 4C14.11 & 3C452 (highest priority  first). Catalog in prlo_ivb.edb.
