GRB021004 summary 30.10.02 F.Bertoldi / update 17.3.03 ------------------------------------------------------- The bolometric millimeter observations were made at 5 epochs between October 5 and 12, using the 37-channel {\it Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer} (MAMBO; Kreysa et al. 1999a, 1999b, http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/staff/bertoldi/mambo) array at the 30-meter IRAM telescope on Pico Veleta (Spain). MAMBO has an effective (half power) band width from 210 to 290 GHz, centered at $\sim 250$ GHz for flat source spectra. The afterglow position was targeted with the array's central channel (10.7 arcsec FWHM beam) using the standard on-off mode, in which the telescope secondary reflector chops in azimuth by 32$^{\prime\prime}$ at a rate of 2$\,$Hz. The target was positioned on the central bolometer of the array, and after 10 seconds of integration, the telescope was nodded, so that the previous {\it off} beam became the {\it on} beam. A typical scan lasts for 16 such 10 seconds sub-scans. From a total of 143 scans only two were eliminated on suspicion of technical problems. The average flux densities derive from a coaddition of the fluxes of individual scans, weighted by their inverse average noise level squared. The pointing was checked frequently on strong, nearby continuum sources, usually the 0.7 Jy strong B0007+106 (00:07:56.7, +10:41:48.0, 1950) and it was found to be stable within $\sim 2^{\prime\prime}$. The sky opacity was measured regularly through 'sky dips'. The inferred line-of-sight opacities ranged between 0.36 and 1.05. Gain calibration was performed using observations of Mars, Uranus, and several secondary calibrators. We adopted the average calibration factor of 4200 counts per Jansky recently derived for observations with this instrument, multiplied by a time-variable correction derived from calibrator observations, which ranges between 1.3 and 1.0. The overall flux calibration should be accurate to within 10\% at a 65\% confidence level, including uncertainties of the sky opacity correction. The data were processed using the MOPSI software (Zylka 1998). Correlated sky-noise, computed for each channel as a weighted mean of the signals from the eight best-correlating surrounding channels, was subtracted from each channel. Table X lists the 1.2 mm (250 GHz) flux densities derived for each of the five epochs. The total on-sky integration time amount to 5.5 hours. The strong detection of $4.5 \pm 0.6$ mJy on October 5 appears in conflict with other radio measurements at that same time. However, the flux calibration of this observation is excellent due to near simultaneous observations of seven secondary calibrators and Uranus, all of which yield consistent results.
