During the reign of the learned Landgraf (Count) Wilhelm IV (1567-1592), Kassel was a centre of astronomical research. The observatory, founded in 1560, was the first permanent astronomical observatory of the modern age. Jost Bürgi and Christoph Rothmann were outstanding scholars at that observatory. Around 1586 the first stellar catalogue of the modern history of astronomy was established there, based on own observations.

This book outlines the scientific work of the Kassel observatory on the basis of sources, which were partly used for the first time. The second part contains a partial edition of the German translation of the main work of Copernicus, made in 1586 in Kassel - an excellent document of the history of science and especially of the intellectual climat at the court of the Landgraf of Hessen.
