Proposal Preparation Support for Cycle 9
In view of the ongoing pandemic, the traditional all-day community event has been replaced by a series of pre-recorded video presentations that can be watched conveniently at any time and location of choice. The presentations are complemented by an online community meeting in early April 2022, and by individual one-on-one help via a video conferencing platform.Enjoy ALMA proposal preparation support at home and at times convenient for you!
1) Proposal Preparation Presentations
In place of presentations during an in-person Community Day, the German ARC node offers a series of video tutorials that can be watched at any convenient time. The tutorials cater to astronomers with different levels of expertise, from introductory videos for scientists new to ALMA to a concise update for experienced ALMA users.Tutorials are available on the following topics:
- Introduction to ALMA - an introduction to the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), the world-leading interferometer at mm and submm wavelengths (novice level)
- Radio Interferometry with ALMA: Basic terminology and spatial filtering - an introduction to some basic concepts of radio interferometry: interferometers as spatial filters, synthesized beam/angular resolution, largest angular scale and primary beam/field of view (novice level)
- Radio Interferometry with ALMA: How to set up your observations - an introduction to some basic concepts related to spectral observations: spectral lines, rest frequency, source velocity/redshift, line width and spectral resolution, spectral window setup (novice level)
- Life of an ALMA Project I: From an idea to an ALMA proposal - an overview of the basic steps from the idea for an observation with ALMA to the published results, part I: proposal preparation and propsal review process
- Life of an ALMA Project II: From the proposal to published results - an overview of the basic steps from the idea for an observation with ALMA to the published results, part II: observing process, Quality Assurance and data delivery
- ALMA User Support - an overview of the various forms of user support available to the ALMA community, from newsletters to training opportunities to extended one-on-one help for specific projects
- How to use the ALMA-OT - a series of tutorials on how to prepare a proposal with the ALMA Observing Tool, kindly provided by the ESO ARC
- Writing & Reviewing ALMA proposals - general guidelines for writing ALMA proposals and reviewing them
- What is new in Cycle 9? - an overview of the newly commissioned capabilities of ALMA and of the changes in the proposal guidelines compared to previous Cycles (expert level)
2) Online community meeting and one-on-one help
As a complement to the pre-recorded videos, the German ARC node invites all interested astromoners to an online community meeting via zoom. During the meeting, the authors of the tutorials and other experienced Contact Scientists will be available for further discussion and practical one-on-one help in break-out rooms.If you would like to talk to an ALMA expert, but can not join the community meeting, please send an email to arc at astro.uni-bonn.de for an individual appointment.
