About me: Since 2000, I am a professor for astrophysics at the University of Bonn; before that, I was staff member of the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Garching. A detailed CV and my publication list can be found here.
Research: My main current research fields are cosmology and gravitational lensing, from galaxy-scale lensing, groups and clusters, to large-scale structure lensing. Whereas I am mainly working on theoretical and statistical aspects, a large fraction of our group activity concerns work related to observations.
Projects: Our group is involved in several major projects, among them
- the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 33 "The Dark Universe'', collaboration between astrophysicists and particle physicist in Bonn, Heidelberg and Munich/Garching. The main aim is to study the properties of dark matter and dark energy, both from a theoretical side as well as through astrophysical studies. Our main role is to study the dark components of the Universe through large-scale structure lensing, i.e., cosmic shear;
- the ESA satellite mission Euclid. Our group is involved is various aspects of the scientific preparation of this mission, including shape measurement methods for determining shear, quality control and verification, tests for systematics. In addition, we develop estimators and statistical tools for exploiting the data;
Teaching: For more than 10 years, I have been teaching the courses Cosmology and Einfuehrung in dei extragalaktische Astronomie und Kosmologie anually, as well as a course on Gravitational Lensing. For all three courses, quite extended lecture notes exist. Out of the lecture notes to the introductory course grew the textbook Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology, which is also available in German.
