Profile

Since 2004 I am professor and head of the radioastronomy group at the Argelander-Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn. I was the institute director from 2009 to 2012, deputy director 2013-2014, chair of the physics/astronomy department (Fachgruppe) 2014-2016, member of the faculty council 2018-20, and am currently a vice dean of our Fakultät.

I studied physics at the University of Cologne, then at U.C. Berkeley, where I received my PhD in Physics in 1989. I was a postdoc at Princeton University, at the Institut Astrophysique de Paris, the MPE Garching and the MPIfR Bonn.

My currrent research focuses on the formation of stars, galaxies, and massive black holes in the early Universe, and on constraints on structure formation and cosmological parameters by means of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, X-ray, and weak lensing observations of galaxy clusters. My lesser insterest covered molecular cloud structure, star formation, PDRs, shocks. I taught master-level classes on the interstellar medium and radio astronomy, and bachelor classes on theoretical physics.
